    1. How disgraceful is it that the only reason I can come up with to actually learn Spanish is to be able to read one writer s oeuvre in full I refer to Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, of course, author of my favorite book of all time, Don Quixote Probably, and only if this were the gun test, in which I had to select only one at the risk of death This is a secret Do not tell anyone I said this It is like choosing favorites among your children Many of his lesser known works have not even been translate [...]

    4. In the introduction, the translator argues that had Cervantes never dreamed up and written Don Quixote, his fame would be just as great for having written these short novels I agree They re charming, funny, moving, inventive and, above all, entertaining The characters tell many stories that make up each piece, too, something I loved about the design of the grand tome If you enjoyed that, you ll find much to savor here This edition features ink drawings, songs, poems, a melodious translation, and [...]

    5. Yet another book I had to read in Spanish when I was in college I took a semester long course called Novelas Ejemplares the name in Spanish and that s all we read I really don t rememeber one detail of one story how sad I m giving it three stars to be fair since I don t think I hated it, but who knows

    6. Excellent set of twelve short novels I liked most La se ora Cornelia and least La fuerza de la sangre.

    8. Some of these tales are exemplary, but not all Therefore, in the picaresque spirit, I ve decided to give them an overall 4 gold ducato s which I ll take back, thank you kindly Now onto the reviews The Little Gypsy Girl This is probably the most epic of all The Exemplary Tales, and the one you imagine would be made into a full length picture as opposed to a short film Who would direct it Probably Visconti Narratively it blends poetry and prose better than the other stories, and introduces the mu [...]

    9. Again with the Serbian edition Re i misao , which takes the classic collection of short stories, just picks a few from the whole, and present it as a complete book It is frustrating and confusing And the translation still sucks But Cervantes short stories ARE good Much of Spanish spirit is poured into their core First one of the 3 presented in this invalid edition is by far the best one, a witty and naughty story about jealousy and lust Second story is still good, and 3rd completely forgettable. 10. As the author claims, these are stories are exemplary My favorite has always been the Dog s Colloquy The most impressive thing about the collection is that the wit and power of each story is undiminished by translation and the 400 years that have passed since they were written Hail and farewell to Cervantes

    11. This is a collection of mostly straightforward stories similar to earlier Italian novellas, but I did appreciate The Glass Graduate for its portrayal of the glass delusion and The Dialogue of the Dogs for being a picaresque story with a hero akin to Marryat s Snarleyyow or London s White Fang but appearing much earlier and told in dialogue form.

    12. This books contains twelve short novels and demonstrates the brilliance of the legendary author Highly entertaining with wit and humor, these stories are classic depictions of everyman in the Golden Age of Spain A very good read.

Eso s , me cost much simo trabajo terminarlo A o y siete meses No [...]

    15. So, out of boredom, I grabbed this unread book off of my shelf and puttered through it for a while The translation seemed a little stilted and awkward, but hey, whatevs Then, I got to the story The Glass Graduate , a story that had been recommended to me well over a year ago by a friend And then I quit, because I remembered a what the story was about b why the story had come up in conversation and c why, when I left SF, I didn t go out of my way to stay in contact w that friend In short, the sto [...]

    16. Being able to read the Cervantine corpus in its original language is by and large, one very good reason to learn Spanish In his exemplary novels, Cervantes proclaims that he is the first Castilian novelist and he proves to be a good one Although the very concept of novellas and short stories seems to be rather modern, there you have a couple of catching short stories set in the early 17 century and fraught with as picaresque protagonists as Cervantes himself I can imagine that I d much enjoy th [...]

    17. UNLIKELY TALES Miguel Cervantes collection of short stories translated by Lesley Lipson are well recommended The stories are exemplary in the sense that they are meant to be a good example for the reader as well as edifying and educational though I suspect Cervantes, a mischievous writer if there ever was one, has his tongue firmly in his cheek when he named them. The stories are not quite as brilliant as Don Quixote though they are earthy, lively, bawdy and deal with the day to day reality of th [...]

    19. I m not even going to try to maintain some kind of historical perspective The Little Gipsy Girl is surprisingly okay, but for the most part, I kind of hated these The love stories are banal in the extreme, the satire is flat, and several of them have rapes whose perpetrators are portrayed sympathetically The Force of Blood is bad, but The Illustrious Scullery Maid is the worst in this regard truly horrifying Also, some pretty intense racism It s honestly hard to believe that these are from the a [...]

    20. This is very much a product of its position in literary history, and is difficult to enjoy as anything other than a revealing historical artifact if you are interested in literature of this period If you go in expecting Don Quixote, the brilliance of which almost seems to be barely able to be contained to its pages by its author, you will be disappointed While there are moments of great skill in the stories, they are very much contained and constrained by their form and context.

    22. I understand that the novel writing was in its infancy when Cervantes lived, but these novellas are repetitive and unbelievable I can only read so many stories about the most woman that anybody has every seen or commoners of uncommon virtue who turn out to be kidnapped noble children before I grow bored Some of the novels that break away from that mold are quite interesting though In particular Doctor Glasscase and The Dialogue Between Scipio and Berganze are interested.
