    1. This fun for all and amazing graphic novel both written and illustrated by Julia Gfrorer takes place in a medieval plague filled world full of rats, fleas, furtive couplings, and mass death. The drawings are simple yet elegantly done in an evocative style A distinctive yet haunting feeling runs throughout the work There is no doubt that the times depicted here were quite grim Ms Gfrorer is a masterful storyteller with a distinctive gothic illustration style There is also a theme of pain running t [...]

    2. Julia Gfr rer likes grim She may have been born in the wrong age Not enough visible death around to please her today She needs the Middle Ages I reviewed her Black is the Color, and liked it, and that would be her favorite color, I bet In her acknowledgements she thanks, among many others, a mountain of corpses Ha This story is set in a medieval village, where the plague is taking many people Think Bergman s The Seventh Seal but without the jokes yes, there were a couple jokes in that film The f [...]

    3. Short, grim, poignant This little graphic, gothic missive is a jab of pain and hope Quiet, yet profoundly moving in its sadness, emotional resiliency, and humanity There is an expressionistic hint behind the flowing lines of the art that add an underlying tension to what is already a tense piece In terms of length, it is a mere distraction, but a distraction that reaches inside you, if you linger long enough to let it The afterglow of mixed feelings will stay with you for far longer than it took [...]

    4. I love Julia Gfr rer s aesthetic It s definitely not for everyone, but damn is it one of the best depictions of grief that I ve ever seen Her work is so human and deceptively simple I don t really have anything to say about it except that it s wonderful.

    5. Well this was certainly out of my usual norm but I enjoyed it Quick read, but packs a lot of stuff Gothic horror with romance, this tells the story of Agnes, who seems to have some type of supernatural connection the only part to have stumped me really during the medieval time period, perhaps around the Black Plague Definitely different but visceral.

    6. Laid Waste is a grim and bleak, yet beautiful story about Agn s, a widow with supernatural powers living in a medieval plague town In this town, love is everywhere, but hanging on slender threads that could snap at any moment Every line of every panel is drawn with incredible care I found myself thinking about the characters faces, and the detailed drawings of the plague carrying fleas, long after reading it.

    7. Far too short, this diary like story looks written in pencil as if by witness account.A town is riddled with plague with a brief window into the life of a young woman.I wanted and could see far potential here I was flooded with ideas of my own.Take a look, worth it.

    8. The artwork was stunning, using only pen and shading with lines. The story was thoughtful exploring love during a depressing plague My confusion was with the epilogue and prologue a bit too abstract for me to get in the context of the main story.

    9. I fell in love with Black is the Color This had its moments but I didn t have the same feeling of love towards it

    10. Set in a plague ridden town Laid Waste is a beautiful and horrifying representation of how humans continue to live through unimaginable tragedy and loss.

    11. Shit dumb I wish cartoonists would use their craft to work with people who specialise in writing stories.

    12. For something I didn t GET, this was pretty cool the atmosphere, you know Most effective if you ve got Burzum playing in the background Other than that, not much to say about this short one It s enough to wonder what else Julia Gfr rer has done

    13. No question the art is fantastic But like with Gfr rer s other work, Too Dark to See, I struggle to under the story The ending is easier to grasp here though Are we to understand that Agnes, the main character, as a baby was accidentally buried alive and saved only by her mother, who awoke from a nightmare about Death coming for her child It s confusing how this scene is relevant does it render her immune from the plague that s rampant in her village In their desperate grief, she and Giles, a fe [...]

    14. I really enjoy the work of Julia Gfr rer The detailed gothic inspired artwork The casual pacing The often silent progressions This work read like several of her others, although it didn t have the impact on me as did Palm Ash or Black Is the Color.
