    1. We last left Sigrid in Norwegian by Night, after the end of a case that seriously impacted her professionally and personally In this outing Sigrid comes to Jefferson County in search of her brother, at the request of her father She finds her brother wanted by the police in the mysterious death of a black woman She meets Irving Wiley, former divinity student, now elected Sheriff of the County where the death occurred She also gets a first hand look at race relations and other oddities of a countr [...]

    2. 3.5 starsIt pains me really, pains me to have to give the marvellous Miller less than the full 5 star treatment, but this book and I just, somehow, didn t gel There s so much potential here structured via a Norwegian outsider s view of America, plus an urgent attention to race and, specifically, the shooting of black citizens by white police officers a particularly emotive example of which is in this story yet, it never quite felt like the book took off Miller s trademark gimlet wit and absurdis [...]

    3. The Scandi cop and the cowboy booted sheriff. This is the follow up story to Derek B Miller s wondrous debut Norwegian by Night which should be read first to gain maximum enjoyment from this one Sigrid deg rd is an efficient 40 year old Norwegian cop on extended leave from her senior post after a police operation ended in debacle Her older brother Marcus, a depressive, has lived in upstate New York for many years When Marcus s letters dry up, their long widowed father is so concerned that he buys [...]

    4. I thought American By Day was very good in the end It is very well written, witty, engaging and thoughtful.Be warned that this is the sequel to Norwegian By Night and the first 50 pages or so form a very extensive spoiler, so I d recommend reading Norwegian By Night first In fact, I found the opening rather a struggle, with a lot of slightly unconvincing recapping and scene setting However, when the protagonist Sigrid arrives in the USA from Norway to find out what has happened to her brother, t [...]

    5. Sigrid deg rd, the Norwegian police officer in command of the emergency response force from the dramatic ending of NORWEGIAN BY NIGHT, travels to the United States at her father s request to find Marcus, her missing older brother Marcus had fled his adjunct professor position and his home in upstate New York following the suspicious death of his girlfriend, Dr Lydia Jones Sigrid reluctantly joins forces with Sheriff Irving Wylie, who has a master s degree in divinity from Harvard, to find Marcus [...]

    6. I realised that this book was a sequel only after I finished reading the book and sat down to write this review My interest is totally piqued in Norwegian by Night now.American by Day supposedly starts off where Norwegian by Night ends Sigrid deg rd, is a top cop in the Norwegian Police Department Still recovering from her encounter with a criminal Norwegian by Night follows the life of this criminal , her father requests her to go to America Go to America to find out if her elder brother, Marcu [...]

    7. A Norwegian police officer, on leave following her involvement in a shooting, travels to the United States to find her brother who has disappeared in upstate New York He is wanted by the local police for questioning when his African American girlfriend plunges to her death shortly after a jury exonerates the white police officer who shot and killed her nephew while he was playing with friends I really enjoyed this book Miller s biting observations of American life, its excesses and quirks, along [...]

    8. I don t quite know what to make of Derek B Miller s novels Some of his characters are extraordinarily well developed and memorable, while other key characters are utterly flat and forgettable His stories weave the forward thrust of a crime novel, with the larger scope of literary fiction So he s not only tackling a possible murder investigation, but exploring race, class, culture, politics, and the justice system I want to like these works, and in moments I love them, but they also fall short fo [...]

    9. If you loved Norwegian by Night, you will love this If you didn t read Norwegian by Night, go read it right away Miller s characters are quirky and terrifically smart and prevail with not much than their brains and good old fashioned obstinance.

    10. I hadn t heard of Derek Miller before now, but I m definitely going to read his other books I loved this smart detective story with spot on observations about race and the role of individualism in American culture Chief detective Sigrid from Miller s book Norwegians by Night goes to America to find her missing brother and to heal after the events of the first book The detective story is page turning, the cultural observations thought provoking and the dialog funny causing many out loud chuckles [...]

    11. I was really disappointed in this book Norwegian by Night was so artful in blending character, suspense, and sociocultural conflicts this one is VERY heavy handed, with dialogue that sounds like a political debate forced into the characters mouths Issues of race and social justice in the US are very important, but just weren t handled in a way that felt organic Also the suspense wasn t really there, the action slowed down by all the didactic dialogue.
