This one has a typical Chekhovian outlook Alexei Laptev is captivated by a beautiful young woman in his neighborhood, and he asks her to marry him She has little interest in Alexei, but agrees to marry him because it would be silly not to He is rich, after all Their first few years of marriage are filled with regret, ennui, and tragedy, as Alexei loses a sister, niece, and daughter At the same time, Yulia Laptev finds herself unable to leave her husband and return to her former life in the count [...]

Novela ini cukup tipis, 11 2 dengan Lelaki Tua dan Laut punya Hemingway Tapi harus aku akui, kedalaman bahasan Chekov dalam novela ini cukup satire Pertama, saya suka sikap Alexi yang cinta langsung ajak kawin Heehee Tapi ternyata selanjutnya, Chekov mencoba mendedah bagaimana perkembangan sosial Rusia kala itu Misalkan, Alexi dan Julia yang kemudian tinggal di Moskow merasa lebih terhormat dan berada di kelas lebih tinggi dibandingkan orang orang di desa Julia saat Julia berkunjung Kemudian Che [...]

    3. Interesting interwoven themes of lost love, practical love marrying for money and growing acceptance of ones lot in life are explored in this story set in late nineteenth century Russia.It is a good read, but could do with being longer fully developed.At only ninety odd pages it is definitely worth reading.
